Permanent Residence: Economic Immigration & Express Entry
Canada’s economic immigration programs provide pathways to permanent residence for skilled workers and professionals who can contribute to the Canadian economy.
One of the main systems used to manage economic immigration applications is Express Entry.

Express Entry
Express Entry is the online system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to manage applications under three federal economic immigration programs:
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Candidates who qualify for at least one Express Entry program may create a profile and enter the Express Entry pool.
Candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Factors can include age, education, official language ability, Canadian and foreign work experience and other characteristics.
Being eligible for Express Entry does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

Provincial Nomination and Express Entry
Some Provincial Nominee Program streams are connected to Express Entry.
For eligible candidates, a provincial nomination through an Express Entry-aligned stream can significantly affect their CRS score and permanent residence strategy.
Provincial programs have their own eligibility requirements, occupations, selection criteria and application processes.
