What is Spousal Sponsorship?
Spousal sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residence. The goal is to keep families together by allowing sponsored spouses to live, work, and establish their lives in Canada.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible as a sponsor, you must:
-
Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
-
Be at least 18 years old
-
Be able to prove your financial ability to support your spouse
-
Not be receiving social assistance (except for disability benefits)
-
Not have been convicted of certain crimes
The sponsored spouse must:
-
Be at least 18 years old
-
Have a genuine relationship with the sponsor
-
Pass medical and security checks
Types of Spousal Sponsorship
There are two types of sponsorship applications:
-
Inland Sponsorship – This is for spouses already in Canada on a valid visa. They may be eligible for an Open Work Permit while their application is being processed.
-
Outland Sponsorship – This applies to spouses living outside Canada. Applications are processed through the visa office responsible for their country of residence.
